About Root Canals

A root canal is a procedure to replace infected pulp within the root canal with an inert material. Only a dentist can determine if a root canal is necessary, and they make that determination with an exam and x-rays. Root canals are performed in order to save a tooth that is seriously infected.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

If you have any of these symptoms, call AAdams Dental Care to set up an appointment. While there is no guarantee until a thorough exam, a root canal may be in your future.

A severe toothache in which pain worsens when pressure is applied

Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures

Discoloration or darkening of the tooth, especially a grey color

Swelling and/or tenderness on the gums

A pimple on the gum that is difficult to be rid of or will not stay away

About Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is a procedure in which a tooth is loosened and then removed from the gum socket. It is a minor surgical procedure that is performed with the patient locally anesthetized.

Reasons for Tooth Extraction

The most common reason a tooth may need to be extracted is severe damage caused by tooth decay. This typically occurs when appropriate dental care has been neglected. Preventative care, including regular dental check-ups, will reduce the chances of needing a tooth extraction, but there are other reasons it is sometimes necessary.

Crowded teeth

Severe infection that isn’t clearing up with antibiotics

Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Infection in a compromised immune system
